Description: ABSTRACT: Urban agriculture conducted with ecological principles is an alternative to produce healthy food, but it demands planning and suitable technologies. This ecological approach must be based on crop diversity, organnic or mineral fertilizers from natural origin and control of pests and diseases by non-toxic means. Cultivation of different species is the guarantee of food richness and offer of varied products. Composts, biofertilizers and green manure are presented as organic nutriet resources. Bio-insecticides, natural enemies and utilization of botanic preparations constitute suitable pest and disease. management strategies to urban agriculture. The international experiences treat about application of these principles on feed production, emphasizing the diversified plots in Austria and the system called organoponico in Cuba. In Brazil are reported since the pioneering works in ecological urban agriculture started in Belo Horizonte, MG, to the more recent ones implemented in Campinas, SP, and Natal, RN. The experiences developed in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, the urban agriculture program of São Paulo, SP and the Brasília, DF, initiatives are presented too. This publication had as objective, therefore, present the importance and alternatives of crop management based in ecological principles in urban agricultural activity, their constraints, besides describe experiences conducted in several cities and countries of the world.
