Description: ABSTRACT: This paper the Gross Internal Product (GIP) estimated of the Brazilian Savannah region between 1970 and 1996, when it was 100.84 billion dollars. This study was based on the following datasets: the number of muncipalities with respective GIP estimated in the Savannah and in the country; and the list of names and corresponding identification codes used in official surveys. The number of Brazilian municipalities increased by 43% in the last 30 years, most of them without regular economic records. In 1996, the savanna had 941 towns. The boundary of this region was based on the vegetation cover index. It has been modified dramatically due to agriculture and beef cattle ranching in the last three decades. In 1970, about 87 towns responded for 65% of the savannah's GIP. In 1996, 36 were responsible for 70%. These are located in the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Federal District. This study showed that a limited number of reference towns can be to estimate GIP in a rapid, inexpensive and reliable way.
