Descripción:	Although early studies of the economics of technological change focused almost exclusively on high-tech sectors (see, for example, Freeman's [i994] review of the literature), since the mid-l990s re- searchers have also investigated the characteristics and specificities of innovation in traditional sectors, such as thefood and beverage (F & B) industry (Alfranca, Rama, and von Tunzelmann, 2002, 2005; Christensen, Rama, and von Tunzelmann, 1996; Earle, 1997; Galizzi and Venturini, I996; Grunert et al., 1997b; Koku, I998; Garcia Martinez and Burns, I999; Menrad, 2004; Rbder, Herrrnann, and Connor, 2000; Traill and Meulenberg, 2002). Academic studies of this subject recognize the increasing importance of innovation, including even minor improvements, for the competitiveness and performance of F & B companies (Connor, I981). Most current knowledge regarding innovation and technological change in the F & B industry comes from evidence gathered in devel- oped countries; analyses of innovation in the F & B industry of less developed countries (hereafter, LDCs) are rare. Some such studies have been published in languages other than English, although many of the articles on this topic are case studies of the F & B industry and companies in that sector; while they often provide useful information and analyses, researchers have not yet systematically interpreted their results in order to detect general pattems of innovation in the food industry of LDCs. Our study is intended to partially rectify this shortcoming by re- viewing recent research on technological change in the Brazilian food and beverage industry (hereafter, the BF & Bl). Brazil‘ is an important case study since it is one of the world's major producers and exporters of agro-industrial products. Our analysis will be based on a review of selected literature in English, Portuguese, and Spanish and on pub- lished statistical data.
