| Descripción: | Maximizing output per unit area while shortening production cycles is essential for the economic viability of feedlot systems, particularly given the high input costs. Although feed additives are widely used to improve performance in beef cattle, limited information exists regarding their effects on dairy-origin steers. This study evaluated the impact of virginiamycin and lasalocid supplementation on the performance and carcass traits of Holstein steers in a feedlot. Thirty-six Holstein steers (82 ± 1 kg) were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments: Diet 1 (virginiamycin 27 mg/kg DM + lasalocid 30 mg/kg DM), Diet 2 (virginiamycin 10 mg/kg DM), and Diet 3 (without additives). Diets were formulated to target an average daily gain (ADG) of 1.3 kg. Steers fed Diet 1 achieved higher total weight gain (278.7 kg) and ADG (1.29 kg/day) compared to Diets 2 and 3 (P< 0.005). Diet 1 also improved feed conversion (5.51 kg DM/kg WG) and feed efficiency (0.20 kg WG/kg DM). Carcass results showed greater slaughter body weight (395.25 kg, P = 0.037) with additive use. In conclusion, combining virginiamycin and lasalocid effectively enhances growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass productivity in Holstein steers finished in feedlot systems. |
